VBmatch and ARPD will co-host a Ball Control & Defense Clinic in Alameda on Monday, June 20th (8:00pm - 10:30pm). The clinic will provide 90 minutes of Instruction & Drills followed by appx 60 minutes of Open Play.
NOTE: The Open Play from 9:30-10:30pm is optional so we can not guarantee the number of players that will actually participate in the Open Play.
In the past, we've held clinics that covered hitting, serving, setting and passing in general. This clinic will focus specifically on Ball Control & Defense.
There are many players out there who are good hitters and love hitting; but quite often, they are one-dimensional players with an incomplete package of skills. A good hitter will hardly get to use his/her hitting talent if he/she can't pass the ball (especially in a quads or doubles game). Without a good pass, the set will likely be imperfect and off the net, increasing the difficulty in timing the hit. In volleyball, each move sets up the next one. The set builds upon the pass; the hit builds upon the set. For this reason, ball control is essential for a good game of volleyball. Yet ball control is an extremely under-rated / under-valued part of the game -- perhaps because passing / defense is more about finesse and lacks the thunder and showiness of hitting.
However, if you focus on honing your skills for this non-glamorous part of the game, it will pay dividends in the overall results. By passing well and defending well, you will get more passes to your setter in the front zone 2-3 feet from the net. Your setter will be able to give you easier sets to hit (as opposed to leading sets that require the hitter to chase the ball -- the most difficult sets to hit)
IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS CLINIC IS INTENDED FOR INTERMEDIATE PLAYERS. This is NOT a clinic for Beginners. This clinic assumes that players already have fundamental skills and several years of playing experience.
We will work on developing and honing those fundamental skills for a higher level of competition.
A good pass is not just a ball that arcs into the front zone. The height of the pass, the speed of the pass, and the over-all trajectory are all important. We will get into the "technicals" of an optimal pass and how you can make it easier for your teammate to set the ball.
DEFENSE: 70% of defense is anticipating what the opposing hitter (or setter) will do and moving to the right spot. The other 30% is technique when making contact with the ball. When your opponent makes an imperfect pass or an imperfect set, that limits what their hitter can do. The defense should therefore adjust accordingly. We will go over specific defense scenarios and identify what the hitter will likely do in those scenarios (i.e. the hitter's highest percentage hit or shot given a particular set) and how you should defend.
Come join us for a fun day of volleyball instruction and drills and hone your skills for a higher level of competition!
